It was consecrated by Bishop Fray Domingo de Silos Moreno in 1838. It presents a variety of architectural styles, since it was started in Baroque style and ended in neoclassical style. Their chapels, crypt and the west tower, from which you can enjoy panoramic views of the city, are remarkable.
It’s located near the modern cathedral in the neighborhood of El Populo. This cathedral was built by King Alfonso X of Castile, the Wise, in the time of Pope Urban IV. It was considered cathedral until 1838, when the cathedral of the city moved to the New Cathedral. Since that time, is considered just a Church.
The two existing cathedral in Cadiz, are separated by the former Bishop’s Palace and the Bishop Corridor.
It is a baroque temple built with an elliptical plant between 1685 and 1719, according to a project from the “alarife” Blas Diaz. Its altarpiece includes an Immaculate Conception by Murillo, considered one of the best of the painter. Outside, the headstones commemorating the centenary of the Cortes of Cadiz who gave birth here to the Constitution of 1812.
It’s a small but unique architectural and artistic ensemble, consisting of two small religious enclosures with very different nature and typology. The upper church, dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, takes shape through eight tall Ionic columns of marble, attached to the curved ornament, on which supports the elegant elliptical vault with lunettes at the base where, among others, are the Lord’s Supper, The multiplication of the loaves and fishes and the parable of the wedding of the king’s son, a work of Francisco de Goya.
The lower chapel is dedicated to the Passion of Christ, in sharp contrast to the upper one, is very sober. It has an open plant with three naves separated by columns with square bases and its altar front features a stunning full marbled Calvary life-sized, work of the sculptors Vaccaro and Gandulfo, for which Joseph Haydn composed his famous Oratory of the Seven Words of Christ on the Cross.
It was discovered in 1980 in an archaeological dig aimed at locating the Castillo de la Villa. It’s located behind the church of Santa Cruz.
It has certain characteristics that differentiate it from other Roman theaters found so far, including:
- It’s one of the largest theaters. The diameter of its cavea is over 120 m, and its capacity would be around about 20,000 spectators, many if we consider that the population would be around 50,000.
- It’s the oldest theater in those known so far of the Peninsula.
- It’s one of the few public buildings of the Roman Hispania mentioned in his works by important figures such as Cicero and the Greek historian Strabo.
In 1598 there was only one hospital in Cadiz, called de la Misericordia. The situation became unbearable, since being Cádiz a much frequented port, with people without residence pending its passage to the Indies, sick and helpless women frequently died in the doorways of public buildings. It’s a beautiful baroque building from the mid-eighteenth century, a work of Pedro Luis Gutiérrez de San Martín. Sevillian master (1705-1792). The image of Our Lady of Carmen who presides over the main altar from its niche is by Candelero (XVIII).
One of the most characteristic and important buildings of the city, which combines neoclassical and Isabelline styles.
Built over the former cigar factory, it’s a Neomudéjar building with a glazed ceramic cover, located in the historical district. It hosts numerous events, exhibitions and fairs, which bring together national and international visitors.
Exposes a set of pieces and paintings from different periods that we can see in different phases. In the ground floor, we find the archaeological section with pieces from the Lower Paleolithic and others with Roman origin. On the first floor, there’s an interesting collection of paintings from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century from Spanish and European painters, while the second floor, houses the section of Ethnology with the Tia Norica’s puppets and a collection of contemporary art from well-known artists.
It was the official watchtower of the port of Cadiz in the past, and has the best views of the city. It has a camera obscura which projects a vivid and moving image of what is happening at that time outside.

The park has a more or less trapezoidal form, bordering, among others, Gonzalez Tablas Street where we find the main entrance. The door on this side allows access to a wide central avenue, divided into three streets by a double row of symmetrical parterres, with common cypress trees in the corners, Californian cypress trees in the center (all clipped English style), and between both species, date palms.
The rest of the park is characterized by its asymmetry, which manifests itself in the diversity of forms of its parterres and in the irregular layout of its rides. You can count more than 100 species of different trees and shrubs, many of them belonging to species not found in other parks and gardens of the city.
One of the favorite places of all visitors is La Gruta, the lake with waterfall where live ducks and geese.
The city boasts of its fantastic beaches, which attract a diverse tourism virtually all times of the year: La Victoria, the beach of Cortadura, Santa Maria del Mar and La Caleta.
